Democrats are expert crisis manufacturers, capable of spotting an existential threat even where none exists. So, it was rather rich to hear Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer accuse President Trump of inventing the very real crisis on our southern border.
“This president just used the backdrop of the Oval Office to manufacture a crisis, stoke fear, and divert attention from the turmoil in his Administration,” Schumer huffed during the Democrat response to President Trump’s Oval Office address Tuesday evening.
Pelosi reiterated the same talking point while urging the President to abandon his commitment to border security and end the government shutdown, declaring that “President Trump must stop holding the American people hostage, must stop manufacturing a crisis, and must reopen the government.”
It’s no secret, however, that the Democrat Party and its loyal allies in the mainstream media have long been the real crisis factory in America, stoking public outrage over everything from “toxic masculinity” to the Russia witch hunt.
In November, the Democrats sharply criticized President Trump for requesting the resignation of Attorney General Jeff Sessions, arguing that the move could spark a devastating “constitutional crisis.” This was the same warning Democrats issued earlier in the year when they feared that the President was getting ready to end the Mueller investigation.
Some liberal pundits have even argued that the entire Trump presidency is a crisis in itself, and that “the president of the United States has been carrying out a systemic attack on the institutions of our democracy.” Of course, since there isn’t any actual evidence to support that conveniently ambiguous claim, they have to base the argument on things like President Trump’s criticism of the Mueller witch hunt.
Global warming is another manufactured crisis that the Democrats have exploited to their political advantage for years. Once the “crisis” was popularized by Al Gore in a bid to regain relevance after his defeat in the 2000 presidential election, global warming hysteria quickly gained public traction, and was eventually used by Democrats to justify outrageous environmental regulations and corporate subsidies under President Obama.
Notably, the scientific community is now once again seriously considering the possibility that Earth could be facing global cooling instead of global warming. Don’t expect Democrats to apologize for trying to dismantle our economy if that theory catches on, though — as Rahm Emanuel can tell you, they never let a good crisis go to waste.
The Democrats also love to promote their radical ideas in academia, including the unhinged claim that “toxic masculinity” is creating a “rape culture” on American college campuses.
Although many experts dispute the accuracy of the statistics used to support the existence of a “rape culture,” liberal lawmakers have repeatedly invoked the most severe estimates as an excuse to limit the due process rights of college students accused of sexual misconduct. Public officials thereby position themselves as champions of women’s rights while pawning off the difficult job of adjudicating individual cases onto college administrators who are ill-prepared for the task.
The Democrats who are accusing President Trump of manufacturing a crisis need a reality check.
When the President addressed the American people from the Oval Office Tuesday night, he delivered a fastidiously factual speech backed up by data from multiple government sources and research institutions.
President Trump revealed, for instance, that ICE officers made “266,000 arrests of aliens with criminal records including those charged or convicted of 100,000 assaults, 30,000 sex crimes, and 4,000 violent killings” in the last two years.
The President also mentioned another startling statistic about illegal immigration: according to some estimates, one in three women are sexually assaulted during the arduous journey to illegally cross the U.S. border.
It’s difficult to understand how politicians who passionately decry “toxic masculinity” and “rape culture” could ignore concrete facts about the ongoing humanitarian crisis and real rape epidemic created by rampant illegal immigration.
The Democrat Party, however, has never had a particularly close relationship with facts — recall newly elected Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s assertion that it’s more important to be “morally right” than “factually … correct.”
Sadly, when it comes to the crisis on the border, the Democrats are neither.
Borders work if given a chance, and so do President Trump’s policies. If the wall works half as well as the Democrats’ obstruction of President Trump’s agenda, it will go down in history as the greatest wall ever.
